Bei der Temperatur von schätzungsweise einem osmanischen Dampfbad kommt einem nicht gerade der Gedanke, die Fenster zu schließen. Wenn dann aber im Nachbarhaus irgendjemand sehr sehr laut 3 Stunden lang Joan Baez-Platten hört, rückt das dann doch in den Bereich des möglichen. Ich kann mich bei diesem Vibrato-Gewimmer nicht konzentrieren. Ihr etwa?

Die neue Justin Timberlake-Single ist gut. Die Produktion scheint ein Spin-Off von "Maneater" zu sein: gerade Kick, schräge Synthesizer. Ein bisschen schade, dass der Soul etwas auf der Strecke geblieben ist. Und Justins Performance hätte auch Britney übernehmen können. Aber dieser Refrain… ganz hervorragend neben der Spur stehend. Timbaland mal wieder. Und außerdem noch ganz nah an House dran. Zwingendes Studienobjekt für alle Produzenten würde ich sagen. Bei Stereogum gibt es einen Yousendit-Link zum MP3.

Das hier macht mich irgendwie traurig: Top Of The Pops UK wird eingestellt. Momus schreibt darüber einen sehr schönen Artikel. Eigentlich ist das Ende der Sendung ja nicht so wahnsinnig schlimm - wer informiert war, konnte sie sich eh sparen. Ich bedauere auch nicht das Verschwinden eines wöchentlichen Fernseh-Rituals. Was ein wenig schmerzt ist, dass Dirrty Pop ein wichtiges Medium verloren hat. "Kommerz Is The New Subkultur" oder so ähnlich ließe es sich vielleicht ausdrücken. Was aber natürlich überhaupt nicht auch nur ansatzweise den Zustand richtig erklärt. Naja… Wer sich alte Sendungen anschauen möchte: Bei Youtube gibts einige TOTP-Auftritte zu sehen (u.a. ein exzellent lahmer Playback-Auftritt von T.A.T.U.). Und für die tägliche Dusche an Aktuellem gilt es, Popjustice zu checken.

no, not such a thing. i mean something like this. yes, that’s right. something where i can put aaaall my money in. i’m sick of carrying it around in my pant pocket, i’ve grown up you know ;-). the problem is: there are so much awful looking wallets in the world [same goes for gent’s shoes]… where can i find a nice one?

hm. i’m neither a geek [this wallet comes with a pocket for carrying an ipod nano] nor an old man [look at the design] and i wonder who is buying this? it may be good to stop men from carrying their wallets around in their pant pockets though.

i guess this will be a long and consumptive search.

to some it may appear naive making music to prove a 50 cent quote wrong may appear naive to some of you [cause this quote is, like many other 50 cent statements, OBVIOUSLY stupid], but it’s definitely not common sense that hip hop must be open for all people, regardless what colour or gender - so the mirror boiyz’ approach deserves respect. their beats/arrangements need more space though, but judge for yourself: myspace.com/mirrorboiyz

jason forrest - war photographer video clip

fredrik of stora sent me a dvd of jason forrest’s legendary “war photographer” video clip (directed by joel thrussell) fredrik & told me that it has been downloaded over 300000 times to date. wow! the video reminds me of a passage in mel cheren’s book “keep on dancin”, where he points out that both the distinction between disco & mainstream rock and the backlash against disco in the beginning 80s had their roots in the 60s, a time where the beatles’ and stones’ were big:

[…] british boys were masturbating their guitars, while black americans were working out rhythm and dance routines, and exploring novel ways to make you boogie. […]

my first record

hamburgian magazine szene hamburg asked me to do an article on “my first record”. you can find it in their recent issue. of course it’s in german, so now here we go with an english version:

my first record: pet shop boys, actually (1987)

the product range in the record section of our local department store was small and awful and even the nastiest weather on earth didn’t hold me back from buying this record. speaking of the weather, this was some kind of omen, cause my life with this record and with the pet shop boys has often been not that easy. we didn’t go through dramas in my family (some conservative dads worried about their sons’ heterosexuality), however i had my first love at that “actually” time and my girlfriend found the pet shop boys totally uncool. neil tennant and chris lowe really weren’t the popidol prototypes: they weren’t manic (like prince), they weren’t obsessed with provocation (like madonna) and they weren’t stunning dancers (like michael). it’s been easy to hate the pet shop boys. many people said: they got a singer that can’t really sing, they got banal lyrics, their music sounds calculated. over the years all the naggers seem to have finally disappeared, maybe cause there are other artists they can jump at. i love this album to date and also think of it as the bands’ best work. the band and their producers seem to have worked hard, not stopping until having achieved the best possible arrangement. moreover, it contains my alltime fave “rent” - a great reflection of banality combined with forward-thought italo-disco. Hit music.
