Meine Platte des Tages. Die A-Seite ist eher schüchtern und dezent, dabei aber trotzdem super Disco-Gewackel. Anhören und kaufen im Gigolo-Shop.

Bei der Temperatur von schätzungsweise einem osmanischen Dampfbad kommt einem nicht gerade der Gedanke, die Fenster zu schließen. Wenn dann aber im Nachbarhaus irgendjemand sehr sehr laut 3 Stunden lang Joan Baez-Platten hört, rückt das dann doch in den Bereich des möglichen. Ich kann mich bei diesem Vibrato-Gewimmer nicht konzentrieren. Ihr etwa?

Die neue Justin Timberlake-Single ist gut. Die Produktion scheint ein Spin-Off von "Maneater" zu sein: gerade Kick, schräge Synthesizer. Ein bisschen schade, dass der Soul etwas auf der Strecke geblieben ist. Und Justins Performance hätte auch Britney übernehmen können. Aber dieser Refrain… ganz hervorragend neben der Spur stehend. Timbaland mal wieder. Und außerdem noch ganz nah an House dran. Zwingendes Studienobjekt für alle Produzenten würde ich sagen. Bei Stereogum gibt es einen Yousendit-Link zum MP3.

New Flesh "Universally Dirty": Ich sag jetzt nicht Grime dazu, sondern: Für die Mitt-Nuller Jahre relativ typischer Versuch, Hip-Hop für die 2010er-Jahre fit zu machen. Soviele Stile werden miteinander verbunden, dass jeder für sich in den Hintergrund tritt und etwas komplett neues entsteht. 2006 eben. Es stecken Elemente von Dancehall, Reggae, Garage, Leftfield und House drin. Die Knaller der Platte: “Home Movie” und “Who’s The Daddy” - ersterer verneigt sich nach zahlreichen anderen vor den Neptunes für ihre “Drop It Like It’s Hot”-Knik-Knak-Schnalz-Hookline. In zweiterem eiern Synthesizer und Macker um die Wette. Wahnsinn. Big Dada!

Auch gut: Linus Loves "Stage Invader". Die klauen sich so schöne Sachen zusammen.

Ihr könnt es euch fast denken: Ich habe ein leichtes Faible für Atomic Kitten. Eine Galerie, die sich "Atomic Kitchen" nennt, bekommt dann natürlich einen Sympathie-Vorschuss. Dass der Laden dann doch nicht so hieß, weil sich jemand geirrt hatte, ging letztlich ein bisschen unter. Jedenfalls rannte dort ein Typ rum, der von den ausgestellten Bildern wohl welche gekauft hatte und so ziemlich jeden anquatschte, der nicht schnell genug das Weite suchen konnte. Und natürlich kam er dann auch zu uns. Seine erste Frage war: "Was macht ihr beruflich?". Zu unserer Antwort meinte er dann sinngemäss: "Ah, alles Künstler, super! Ich bin Jurist. Ist immer gut, Künstler zu kennen. Man muss immer dranbleiben. Love, peace and music, ihr wisst das ja". Irgendwie fand ich ihn in seiner Übertriebenheit ganz sympathisch. A propos übertrieben: mein Hit der aktuellen Pet Shop Boys-Platte befindet sich auf der "Fundamentalism" Bonus-CD:

well, sweden brought itself on topic […baby one more time]. alcazar are still pausing for pushing their solo careers - and in comes the debut album by former a*teens member marie serneholt, released last week. i don’t think it’s brillant, but as arjan points out, it reminds of britney’s early albums, which i love to date. most of the late 90s boyband/britney stuff has been penned and/or produced in sweden. britney, backstreet boys, nsync… they all worked with denniz pop, max martin or per magnusson. speaking of britney - what is she up to lately? any new songs in the works?

here’s a little list of my personal may tunes that are definitely worth a listen:

• nelly furtado - maneater (for overtopping all the other stuff played on the radio at the moment)
• does it offend you, yeah? - battle royale (for having such a dirty banging sound)
• green velvet - shake & pop (for reminding of "white horse" by laid back)
• mocky - navy brown blues (for this off-rolling melody)
  
• pet shop boys - fugitive (richard x extended mix) (for letting the boys sound more 80s and yet more modern than the tracks produced by trevor horn)
  
• pascal fuhlbrügge - don’t hey come on (for attitude and kicking ass)
  

some of you might know it: i’m a huge green velvet fan. well, there’s a new 12′’ out… it’s called "shake and pop" and is as wicked and ass-kicking as all his previous stuff. it’s available as mp3 at itunes and beatport or as vinyl at the cajual shop and juno.

don’t know why i missed the recent album by pascal fuhlbrügge… maybe because i don’t focus on hamburgian artists as much as i did like, let’s say, 15 years ago. in 1990 i discovered this new label from hamburg: l’age d’or. on mtv’s 120 minutes show i saw a video by "ostzonensuppenwürfelmachenkrebs". i bought the record and fell in love with their intelligent, weird & funny approach to rock-music. after that i became a fan of many other l’age d’or- and associated bands, like die regierung, die sterne, "huah!", "mastino" and the inevitable blumfeld. the hamburg scene’s been quite lively at that time.

pascal fuhlbrügge had huge influence on this - he co-founded l’age d’or and played in an influential pre-"hamburg hype"-band: kolossale jugend. as my german readers likely know the whole story, i’ll switch over to the present. last friday i had the great pleasure to play a gig with pascal at the pop up fair in leipzig. he played a highly danceable set of his own tracks mashed with some hooks by kelis and steve "silk" hurley.

his first solo-album "cd1" [released on feb 27th via materie records] is a collage of pascal’s solo works and the last two years’ recordings by his bands novack & sand11 and friendly artists like dj patex, dj flumroc of saalschutz, popchor berlin and kissogram. like shown on the cover pascal has set up his tapes, hard-disks and stuff in a movable way - the album is more a snapshot of pascal’s present than a deep-thought overproduced work to last for all eternity. there are egoexpress-soundalike house tunes standing next to songs that remind of the l’age d’or rockband-sound in the early 90s. my personal faves are "laptop music controls america" [with a sample of kelis’ "good stuff" and dj patex sounding like kelis], "don’t hey come on" [which i like for the statement and for the hi nrg feel] and "these days" - a song originally interpreted by nico on her chelsea girl album. it’s surprising to hear pascal singing. his performance sounds much like nico’s: amateur-istic voice and heavy german accent. i love him for that!

on june 4th 3rd you’ll get the chance to see him live again. he will play at the finissage of jimmy cauty’s [yep, the klf guy!] exhibition "a stamp collector’s guide to world domination" at the aquarium in berlin.
