what’s going on in pop-land?

May 31, 2006 | 15:43 | pop life | geeky knowledge | tight tunes
while doing some heavy listening to some new hip hop & techno and some classic freestyle stuff, i just lifted my head and thought: what about the real pop world?

well, sweden brought itself on topic […baby one more time]. alcazar are still pausing for pushing their solo careers - and in comes the debut album by former a*teens member marie serneholt, released last week. i don’t think it’s brillant, but as arjan points out, it reminds of britney’s early albums, which i love to date. most of the late 90s boyband/britney stuff has been penned and/or produced in sweden. britney, backstreet boys, nsync… they all worked with denniz pop, max martin or per magnusson. speaking of britney - what is she up to lately? any new songs in the works?

here’s a little list of my personal may tunes that are definitely worth a listen:

channel 101 - yacht rock #9

…that’s the story of yacht rock episode #9, available since last sunday. popularity of the show seems to dip a bit, but for music nerds it’s definitely a must-see. :-) i’m curious if they’ll do an episode #10 since #9 has taken two months to make. but till now they always came up with funny ideas [#7 for instance] and i think they can do it again.

green velvet - shake and pop feat. walter phillips - relief records (2006)

some of you might know it: i’m a huge green velvet fan. well, there’s a new 12′’ out… it’s called "shake and pop" and is as wicked and ass-kicking as all his previous stuff. it’s available as mp3 at itunes and beatport or as vinyl at the cajual shop and juno.

goon - magazin für gegenwartskultur - #17

goon - magazin für gegenwartskultur. i got hold of issue #16 at the broken silence booth and was surprised to see a mitchell brothers article in there, as i haven’t seen an article/interview about them in a german magazine yet. also, it features a couple of illustrations by haina [of salamandroids fame] plus interview [btw… look at this nice drawing he did of me for a flyer a few months ago :-)]

…anyways - the recent goon issue #17 is featuring good articles about coldcut, jimmy edgar and many more plus lotsa reviews on music, literature, an article about stuart pigott and a column by christoph linder. recommended!

pop up discoveries pt.1: pascal fuhlbrügge

pascal fuhlbrügge - cd1 (materie records) - 2006

don’t know why i missed the recent album by pascal fuhlbrügge… maybe because i don’t focus on hamburgian artists as much as i did like, let’s say, 15 years ago. in 1990 i discovered this new label from hamburg: l’age d’or. on mtv’s 120 minutes show i saw a video by "ostzonensuppenwürfelmachenkrebs". i bought the record and fell in love with their intelligent, weird & funny approach to rock-music. after that i became a fan of many other l’age d’or- and associated bands, like die regierung, die sterne, "huah!", "mastino" and the inevitable blumfeld. the hamburg scene’s been quite lively at that time.

pascal fuhlbrügge had huge influence on this - he co-founded l’age d’or and played in an influential pre-"hamburg hype"-band: kolossale jugend. as my german readers likely know the whole story, i’ll switch over to the present. last friday i had the great pleasure to play a gig with pascal at the pop up fair in leipzig. he played a highly danceable set of his own tracks mashed with some hooks by kelis and steve "silk" hurley.

his first solo-album "cd1" [released on feb 27th via materie records] is a collage of pascal’s solo works and the last two years’ recordings by his bands novack & sand11 and friendly artists like dj patex, dj flumroc of saalschutz, popchor berlin and kissogram. like shown on the cover pascal has set up his tapes, hard-disks and stuff in a movable way - the album is more a snapshot of pascal’s present than a deep-thought overproduced work to last for all eternity. there are egoexpress-soundalike house tunes standing next to songs that remind of the l’age d’or rockband-sound in the early 90s. my personal faves are "laptop music controls america" [with a sample of kelis’ "good stuff" and dj patex sounding like kelis], "don’t hey come on" [which i like for the statement and for the hi nrg feel] and "these days" - a song originally interpreted by nico on her chelsea girl album. it’s surprising to hear pascal singing. his performance sounds much like nico’s: amateur-istic voice and heavy german accent. i love him for that!

on june 4th 3rd you’ll get the chance to see him live again. he will play at the finissage of jimmy cauty’s [yep, the klf guy!] exhibition "a stamp collector’s guide to world domination" at the aquarium in berlin.

popup leipzig 2006

apologies go out for not having written a post last friday. i was on the road playing in leipzig, which has been really BIG fun! the gig took place at ilses erika with pascal fuhlbrügge and the dance inc and has been quite a success - so many people approached me and said that they liked my show… wow, thanks! i’ll post some pics to flickr as soon as my camera’s batteries are being recharged…

pascal fuhlbrügge also rocked the shit. it’s been very cool to meet him since he’s one of the protagonists of the so-called "hamburger schule", an "indie"-style which became famous in germany during the beginning of the 90s and which i’ve been a huge fan of. we swapped cds and i’m listening to his album right now - more about that in a few days.

whyspace

May 15, 2006 | 18:39 | pop life

yes, i share your distaste for myspace! i haven’t set up an account yet and never will. but as an artist i can understand why other artists do so. by doing not, you cut yourself off from exposition to musically interested folks. also, myspace is a contemporary communication tool and it’s always good to keep track of that - some of the contacts you build up there might make it to the "real world" and will probably last longer than the myspace hype.

there are so much people hating myspace [whom i don’t understand… if you don’t like it, stop using it…]. some of them probably went there cause they feared some kind of isolation. but why worry? just think of myspace as some kind of club. in the real world, you’d only go to clubs you like - or, to put it more distinct: you don’t miss anything by not going to the clubs you dislike

except some decent laughs.
